Kamiita Town is Japan’s leading producer of sukumo, the fermented indigo dye used in aizome—traditional Japanese indigo dyeing. Why not experience aizome in Kamiita, the hometown of this beautiful craft?
You can try various techniques such as stencil dyeing and wax-resist dyeing using natural sukumo.
The experience takes about 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the item you choose to dye.
Group bookings are welcome—up to 200 participants per day (advance reservation required).
※ If your arrival time or reservation changes, please contact us in advance.
※ If your schedule changes, please note that you may be asked to wait, depending on the day’s booking situation.
Start by selecting the item you’d like to dye—handkerchiefs, scarves, eco bags, T-shirts… there are plenty of options to choose from!
What should I dye today? So exciting! 😊
If you’d like to bring your own fabric, the fee is ¥30 per gram. Please note that some materials may not absorb the dye well, so advance reservations are required for fabric you bring in.

You can create unique patterns on pure white fabric using clothespins, marbles, film canisters, tea strainers, rubber bands, and more! Each tool produces a completely different design, so feel free to mix and match as much as you like.

Once you’ve finished adding your pattern, it’s time for the dyeing! First, dip the fabric in the indigo vat for one minute. Knead it gently to help the dye soak into the fibers. Then, take it out and expose it to the air for another minute to allow oxidation. Repeat this process several times.

As soon as you rinse the fabric, a beautiful indigo blue appears like magic!
It’s a truly amazing moment for everyone who takes part.

Once the fabric is dried and ironed, your masterpiece is complete! Why not create your very own one-of-a-kind aizome item right here at Waza no Yakata?

From young children to adults, everyone can enjoy this experience! Many participants find themselves fascinated by the charm of indigo dyeing, saying things like: “Next time, I want to try this pattern!” “I want to dye a T-shirt next!” “I’d love to make a gift for my parents!” They often come back again and again.
We’d love for you to give it a try— We look forward to welcoming you! 💙
