Aizome is a traditional Japanese dyeing technique in which fabrics are colored blue using dyes extracted from plants. Its main material is sukumo, made by drying and fermenting indigo leaves (tade‑ai). Tokushima Prefecture is known for its active cultivation of tade‑ai, and Kamiita Town—where Waza no Yakata is located—is the largest producer of sukumo in Japan.

At Waza no Yakata, you can experience indigo dyeing using dye solution prepared through traditional methods. By creating patterns on items such as handkerchiefs, bandanas, or T‑shirts, you can make a one‑of‑a‑kind piece of your own. Our staff will guide you through each step, making the activity enjoyable even for first‑timers and children. The entire process, from explanation to completion, takes about 30 minutes to one hour.

At Waza no Yakata, we produce sukumo on-site. Tade‑ai is grown in nearby fields, and the harvested leaves are cut, dried, and fermented within the facility. The dye used in our indigo‑dyeing experiences is also made from this locally produced sukumo.
